Is Part of You Missing the Boat? – Creating a Fully Integrated Practice
Over the years as I've studied different forms of human change science, transformation or emotional clearing work, I've noticed a tendency. A lot of these modalities focus only on a part of what we really are. They lack an integral or integrated approach.
I don't think its a secret that human beings have many facets or aspects to their lives and beingness. There is the standard body, heart & mind of course. Then there is relationship which is an undeniably important part of who we are. We have a belief system that greatly affects how we experience our lives. We have our wounded parts or inner child that clamors for attention. Don't forget our social programming. We have that indoctrination to deal with. One of the most mysterious parts of us is our defense systems. So where do you start? How do you proceed? What is the most effective path? What do you pay attention to?
Good questions. I will ask it back: What DO you pay attention to? Better put: What steals your attention? Or, What bothers you? What is your biggest problem? Or, What hurts?
I am convinced that we all have a natural drive or pull towards integration or wholeness. Ken Wilber calls it the "Evolutionary Impulse". So, stop running around like a chicken with its head cut off, and pay attention to the messages you're getting from your neglected parts. It's not really rocket science. When you pay attention to what is stealing your attention, you are set up to resolve an issue that is at the top of your "natural drive toward wholeness" list.
After you resolve the issue that steals the most attention or bothers you the most, another one will move to the top of the list. If you do this dilligently – I mean on a daily basis – you will notice rapid and dramatic change. You may be launched into deep states of Essence if you really completely purge and integrate a major issue. If you approach your transformational practice in this way, you will not leave anything out. You will be paying attention to everything in the boat. All of who you are.
An important key for really effective practice is fully resolving the presenting issue. In other words, you need to be fully committed to resolution. Dabbleing will greatly prolong your anguish. It's important to go through a full "Cycle of Transformation" with whatever your issue is. Make it a priority to gather the skills and tools you need to get the job done.
